Lymphoedema...

Lymphoedema is a swelling, of any part of the body, due to the build up of lymph fluid.

Primary Lymphoedema - the client may have been born with an inefficient lymphatic system - swelling can occur anytime during life.

Secondary Lymphoedema - Usually as a result of surgery i.e lymph node removal as part of cancer treatment. Can also be due to an accident.

Lymphoedema can be managed by an intensive course of MLD and bandaging. The condition can then be maintained with skin care, exercise, MLD and compression/hosiery garments - some of which may be available through the NHS.
